Cribbage Rockhampton...

Well, after several days of searching BB and I finally found a cribbage board in Rockhampton, Australia.  We even got one on sale!  The store that saved us was Toy World... we had just checked out a game store at Northside Plaza that had advertised online they had cribbage boards and yet they had none... we were driving around just looking, even stopped at the Salvation Army to see if they might ahve a board, but to no avail.  As we were heading toward home we saw a Toy World store and I quickly pulled in. 

Turns out they had two boards... both made in China...l and one was the kind with a hinge that folds up for easy travel and also included a deck of cards.  It also has three tracks so it was certainly the best one for us.

When we got back we tried it out.  BB and I played first a two-player game and altough it was his first time playing BB won.  Next we played a three-player game with DS and DS won that game -- and yes, it was HIS first time playing also.

Then we decided to play one more game and BB won that one pretty soundly so I am so far 0 for 3 on the new board.  Me, the great Crash Cribbage inventor... busted by two crib-rookies.  Very sad, but at least I got them hooked. :o)

And, to mark the occasion I carved the date we bought the board and the location on the back.  I also carved the names of the two winners and put marks for their wins.  We'll see how many each of us has by the time we leave here.

King's Cribbage online...

I just played King;s Cribbage online version created by Damien Blond and I have to say it was pretty fun!  If you have not tried it yet try the link on the left of this screen for King's Cribbage Online.

All you have to do is select a name and password and then login and start playing.  Go to the lounge area and ask a question if you have any trouble.  Someone will help you out. :o)

No Cribbage in Australia...

OK, I know there must be cribbage players in Australia but can you believe we looked all over Rockhampton yesterday and could not find a cribbage board!!!  Shameful... how far the UK has fallen!

FOr you Aussies out there, there is still time to redeem yourself and email me or leave a comment as to where I can get a cribbage board in Rocky.  I'm desperate!

I finally sold my first Crash Cribbage board on Amazon.com! I know, it's not that big of a deal, but I only recently listed it on the site and now I've already sold one. :o)

Cribbage on top of the world!

The climbers have gravitated towards Monopoly, building their confidence by buying the worlds most demanding climbs. Meanwhile, Mark, Patricia, Dave, and Lisa play round after round of Cribbage flaunting their victories as if they had summitted themselves. Sadly, tomorrow the trekkers begin their journey back to Lukla while the climbers continue with their preparations. We will all miss the trekkers as they have become an integral part of the expedition. The climbers will be busy over the next few days but camp won't be the same."

The perfect hand

It was an April “first” for Tom Noble and his partner Gloria Petre as they sat across from each other the morning of April Fool’s. A perfect hand of cribbage lay on the table, staring up at them. Three fives and a Jack had been dealt to Petre with the starter card turned over revealing a five in the same suit as the Jack. A perfect 29 hand.

At first the pair didn’t realize what had occurred.

“I think...” said Petre.

“I’ve never...” said Noble.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Noble recalled, “I had to look at it again, and again.”

The couple get together at least two to three times a week to pit against each other in a friendly game of cribbage.

Neither has witnessed a genuine perfect hand dealt in their lifetime. “We figure we’ve got 120 years of card playing between us,” said Noble.

This was no April Fool’s trick. The highest score that can be achieved occurred during their third game of the morning. “I’ve had a 28 before,” claims Noble. It occurred during a ferry ride, “I was hooting and hollering; the whole ship could hear me!”

The tides may be turning for Petre.

“Usually I’m very lucky when I play cards with her,” said Noble. “She certainly won that game, and I got skunked to boot!”

Cribbage has been played since the early 17th century and has survived with no major changes as one of the most popular games enjoyed by the English-speaking world.

The odds of getting a 28 hand in a two-player game are one in 15,028.

There is a significant difference in achieving a perfect 29 hand in a two-player game. Odds are one in 216,580.

The odds triple if playing with three or four players (one in 649,740).

KEEPING YOUR MEMORY SHARP
• Learn a hobby. Don't use getting older as an excuse for not trying a new activity. It's good for your brain to take on new challenges, said Lynn Grattan, director of the Neuropsychological Diagnostic and Research Laboratory at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, in Baltimore.

• Keep a list or calendar of your activities. This helps you stay organized, allowing your brain to work more efficiently.

• Put important items in the same place each time you use them. This includes your keys and other often lost items.

• Play games. Puzzles, word games and brain teasers are good ways to keep your mind engaged.

• Exercise. Studies show people who keep active have fewer memory problems than those who don't.

• Meet new people. Conversations with different people can recharge your mental batteries and give you something to think about.

• Think positively. Grattan said it helps the brain to function more efficiently. Honest.

"It turns out that there is an American Cribbage Congress (I always thought that the governing body of Cribbage tournaments should be called the Cribbage Board) – and I’ve been on their website before to find that there are no Cribbage clubs anywhere in Oklahoma. As it turns out, there is one in Dallas that holds tournaments each Wednesday evening – but there was nothing else scheduled in the area. But, I called the guy running the club just to see what was up in the area. He was a great guy, who makes Cribbage boards (I intend to buy one), and it turns out that in April, the Saturday before my birthday, they are hosting a tournament that is part of the National ACC tournament. You have to be a member to play – but memberships are only 10.00 a year. For 35.00, you get the cost of membership (which gets a member number as well as subscription to their magazine), cost for the tournament, as well as putting into the pot for a number of winnings for the evening (first 29 score in hand, highest skunk points, and others)."

Mitch dropped his cell phone at a gig there last night, and the person who found it brought the phone to the police station there. Kids on cribbage = future cribbaholics...

NORTH ATTLEBORO - You can easily peg a small group of Community School students as hooked on the game of cribbage.

A group of about 20 students- all fourth- and fifth-graders- are satisfying a craze for cribbage by participating in the school's first-ever cribbage club. The students meet once a week after school for an hour of cards and healthy snacks.

"You get really hooked on it," said 9-year-old Allison Hayes. "All of my friends who don't know how to play think it's going to be boring, but it's not - it's really fun. I love math so this is really fun for me."
