Ace cribbage players are sticklers for the rules, but the state’s mightiest wooden board warrior said all is fair in friendly banter.
While game code is sacred and “timber haulers” are despicable, that doesn’t stop experts from serving up a tall tales and trash talk.

These human calculators “love to drink, play cards and tell lies,” said Jeff Shimp, 70, of Grand Haven, who holds the imposing title of Life Master One Star in cribbage circles....

"For about two dozen players who regularly hunker down over pegged boards at a North Auburn meeting hall for Cribbage Congress games, the world of cribbage is more than a placid board matchup with an underground following.

Grandmaster Angelo Torrise said he’s watched the game grow in Auburn as it moved from a card room to a mobilehome park meeting room to a restaurant to its current home at the Auburn Multipurpose Seniors Center.

On a typical Tuesday, the air will be filled with the flapping sound of cards being shuffled and players voicing their hands and counts..."

WELLAND -- Fonthill Legion's Steve Danku was honoured as this year's Mr. Cribbage as the Niagara District Men's Cribbage League wrapped up its season by handing out awards.

Fonthill Legion won the league championship, while Little Nashville finished in second place and won the A Division playoffs. Welland Legion captured the B Division playoff.

Doubles winners were Gerry Ogilvie and Larry Reddy of Boat House with Valley Way Legion's Dave Somerville the singles winner."

2009 CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT

"Come out and play against some of pro wrestling’s greatest stars! Past players have included Percival A. Friend, Ox Baker, Pat Patterson, Larry Hennig, J.J. Dillon, Paul Vachon, Maurice Vachon and many others!

Cribbage Lessons will be offered Monday from 11:00 AM through 4:00 PM and Tuesday from 10:00 AM through 12:00 PM.

To register, purchase your banquet ticket now and then send an e-mail to this year’s tournament organizer, Al Friend, at ajf0645@juno.com.

Upon arrival, there will be a $20 entrance fee, 100% of which goes to the CAC Benevolent Fund. Registration is open to anybody with a current CAC membership. Please show your 2009 banquet badge when you sign up for the tourney.

Please try to bring a cribbage board and deck of cards with you!

But, he soon realized that by dropping back to the losers bracket and scoring one victory his lifelong goal could still be achieved Angler was now focused on the losers bracket and watched as Basser was working his way up the bracket by defeating all the earlier losers. "Happy New Year from all your fellow Comrades at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 30, Port Hope.

On Dec. 20, 2008, Comrade Reny Debattista hosted a very successful cribbage tournament and the winners were: first place, Janice Delong and Carol Kirton; second place, Bonnie and Pat Brereton.

Following the cribbage tournament was a turkey spin and thanks go to Comrades Dean Brereton, Kim Whalen and Paul Watts for organizing all those turkeys! A special thank you to Dean Brereton and his wife, Karen, for donating reusable grocery bags and Christmas ornaments.

On Jan. 1, 2009, the branch hosted its annual levee with an overwhelming crowd — standing room only. I would like to personally thank Comrade Kim Whalen for assisting me with the preparation of the buffet and also to Comrade Rick Austin and his wife, Joanne, and Laurie Lees for their assistance. Comrade Nancy Elsom was on the clean-up crew and did a fabulous job and it is all very much appreciated!

On Jan. 3, Comrade Jim McIvor hosted a very successful euchre tournament and the winners were: first place, Fraser and Sandra Bolton; second place, Bonnie and Pat Brereton; third place, Doug Abrams and Bob Martell.

On Saturday, Jan. 10, we are having another meat spin, brought back by popular demand, starting at 1:30 p.m. The cost is $2 per spin; it’s a lot of fun!

Please note, the general membership meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m., instead of the second Monday of the month. We encourage all members to attend.

The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 30 is conveniently located at 29A Thomas St. (south end of the Lions Centre) and is open each day at noon (closed Mondays). Hope to see you at the branch — all members and future members welcome!"

Beating the odds in La Grande... 29 hand!!!

The instant loss of color in Dustin Fitzgerald’s face said volumes.
The shouts that followed said even more.

Fate had smiled on Fitzgerald. Now he was smiling, and the 16 other cribbage players with him were jubilantly smiling back.

Fitzgerald had just found himself in possession of a coveted 29 hand Sunday afternoon at the Grass Roots Regional Cribbage Tournament in La Grande. The elusive hand is the crown jewel of cribbage, the highest a player can get in the card game. A 29 hand is comprised of three fives, a jack and a five as the cut card. The five cut card must be the same suit as the jack.
The odds against getting a 29 hand are 216,508 to 1, according to the American Cribbage Congress. For added perspective, an amateur golfer’s chances of getting a hole in one are 12,800 to 1, according to Golf Digest.

“I’ve known people who are senior citizens who have played all their lives and never gotten a 29 hand,’’ said John Fitzgerald, Dustin’s father and the director of the Blue Mountain Peggers, La Grande’s new cribbage club, which put on Sunday’s tournament.
