The perfect hand in Wausau...

From Wausau Daily Herald:

Christine Bremer Zoromski of Wausau called to tell us about her 81-year-old aunt's perfect cribbage hand. On Dec. 1, aunt Dorothy Canada of Schofield was playing cards with her two brothers, Jim Bremer, 74, of Schofield (Zoromski's father) and Elmer Bremer, 87, of Wausau.

Canada's hand contained three fives and the jack of clubs when the five of clubs was turned, yielding a perfect score of 29.

Zoromski said her father recalls having a perfect hand about 30 or 35 years ago, but that's the last any of her family has had one. The Bremer siblings usually play cribbage twice a week now, averaging 15 games a day.

"We've been playing forever. ... My dad remembers his parents playing (when he was) age 14," Zoromski said. "It's in our blood."

Perfect hand and teaching cribbage to the young...

From Mr. Dilittante:

"...My son is off camping up at Stearns (fortunately in a shelter) so today seemed like a good night to start teaching my daughter Maria how to play cribbage. I learned to play cribbage when I was a youngster and I've always loved playing it. Besides being a fun game to play, it's an excellent game for teaching math skills and at 8 1/2 years of age, Maria is at the perfect age to learn.

So we sprawled out on the living room floor and I started teaching her the rules..."

A perfect hand!!!!

From Martini Pundit:

Some onetime readers might find this surprising, but I’m a fairly serious cribbage player. I first learned the game in the early 90s, and I play on average about a dozen games a week. I once got a 28 point hand, which those of you who play know consists of four 5s and a court card. But today, quite unexpectedly on the first hand of the second game, I was dealt the jack of clubs, and the fives of spades, hearts, and diamonds. I tossed the other two cards in my opponent’s crib without a thought (and can’t for the life of me recall what they were), and waited for a lame cut like a two or three.

My surprise was complete when the five of clubs was cut. That equals 28 points but adds one for having a jack of the same suit as the cut card. 29 points! The odds of this hand are said to be 216,580 to 1.

Here’s my perfect hand:

29+... no joking!

I have never had a 29 hand in cribbage. But, yesterday I got a 32 playing cribbage with jokers at eCribbage.com! I was in total shock of course and had to do a screen capture of the hand just to make sure it really happened. Here it is:

The perfect hand

From: North Thompson Times
Apr 09 2007

It was an April “first” for Tom Noble and his partner Gloria Petre as they sat across from each other the morning of April Fool’s. A perfect hand of cribbage lay on the table, staring up at them. Three fives and a Jack had been dealt to Petre with the starter card turned over revealing a five in the same suit as the Jack. A perfect 29 hand.

At first the pair didn’t realize what had occurred.

“I think...” said Petre.

“I’ve never...” said Noble.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” Noble recalled, “I had to look at it again, and again.”

The couple get together at least two to three times a week to pit against each other in a friendly game of cribbage.

Neither has witnessed a genuine perfect hand dealt in their lifetime. “We figure we’ve got 120 years of card playing between us,” said Noble.

This was no April Fool’s trick. The highest score that can be achieved occurred during their third game of the morning. “I’ve had a 28 before,” claims Noble. It occurred during a ferry ride, “I was hooting and hollering; the whole ship could hear me!”

The tides may be turning for Petre.

“Usually I’m very lucky when I play cards with her,” said Noble. “She certainly won that game, and I got skunked to boot!”

Cribbage has been played since the early 17th century and has survived with no major changes as one of the most popular games enjoyed by the English-speaking world.

The odds of getting a 28 hand in a two-player game are one in 15,028.

There is a significant difference in achieving a perfect 29 hand in a two-player game. Odds are one in 216,580.

The odds triple if playing with three or four players (one in 649,740).

Pretty light. Went out with the team at work for lunch, and grilled dinner with Calvin (he had burgers). Then we watched TV and I taught him how to play cribbage. Kay was out of town, so we'll have our celebration this weekend.
