29 hand... after 50 years of cribbage

"Jerome Olesch and his friends play cribbage on a regular basis at the Little Falls Senior Center. He has been playing the game for over 50 years and Thursday, Feb. 11, while playing with Dick Tedford and Clarence Stockwell, he dealt himself the five of spades, five of clubs, five of hearts and the Jack of diamonds. "I thought, how great it would be to have the five of diamonds cut," he said. When Stockwell did cut the five of diamonds, Olesch jumped into out of his seat and threw down his hand for his opponents to see. The odds of getting a perfect cribbage hand of 29 in a game with three or four players are one in 649,740. Olesch did win that game, skunking both his opponents. "We play every Tuesday and Thursday while waiting our turn during the pool tournaments," said Tedford. "Everyone is welcome to to join us." Shown with the perfect hand are (from left): Tedford, Olesch and Stockwell."

CHICO — Susan Levine thinks Cribbage is so much fun, and so valuable, that she devotes time to teaching children to play.
"It's complicated — but it's less complicated than bridge," she said Tuesday, as she played the game with fifth grader Gage Sell at Citrus School.
Gage, 11, likes the game and looks forward to the days Levine visits his class. "I've been playing for a year," he said. "I taught my 15-year-old brother to play."
That's exactly what Levine hopes will happen — that her students will teach their families and friends.
Levine, a retired school library clerk who most recently worked at Citrus School, said there are endless reasons why she likes the game that originated about the same time the Pilgrims were settling at Plymouth...

Pegged Out: 114-year-old Mary J. Ray

"Almost until the end, Mary Josephine Ray would take song requests, crooning traditional Acadian tunes from her childhood and Tin Pan Alley standards. From her New Hampshire nursing home, she played cribbage with a youthful zeal, tallying every point herself. At 106, she shrugged off hip replacement surgery like she had skinned her knee.
She said the rosary, watched her soaps, and cheered on her beloved Red Sox. Hershey’s Kisses were always close at hand. Sometimes, so was a dainty snifter of port.
Ray, who died in her sleep Sunday at the age of 114, had been widely acknowledged as the oldest person in the United States and the second-oldest person in the world. As she climbed the ranks of the world’s most aged, she would say she owed her longevity to God alone. But another reason, her family believes, was that she welcomed each day with gratitude and wonder..."

"...the crowd at American Legion Post 90 in Lake Linden, Mich., on Dec. 30 witnessed something even rarer: a perfect hand of cribbage.
Jim Goldsworthy accomplished the feat, which occurs in about one of every 216,580 hands.
"In 3 1/2 years of our club, nobody's gotten a 29," said Don Hannula, who runs Lake Linden's cribbage club and is also Region 6 statistician for the American Cribbage Congress."

"A co worker of my son’s knew I was ‘into woodworking’, as he puts it and asked him if I could make her a crib board that was a little different. After browsing around and giving her some options, this is what I cam up with.
Yes, there are a few drunk holes in it but with that grain, who really notices :o)
I made the board from Rosewood and the base from Mahogany."
